The school of the future

Ørestad College is the new danish school , built around an open area that can be seen from almost every floor. It looks like a big mall.

It offers fields of study in science, social science and human science. The purpose of the college is to realize the 2005 reform’s aims to strengthen and renew the student’s professional capabilities, to prepare the students better for university and to enhance the science aspect.

The school has wireless internet everywhere and every student receives a free laptop. It even has some orange pillows for students to relax, talk , work on the computer.

This is the school of my dreams!

Not really a selling point. The University is nice but not ground-breaking. There are also nicer looking Universities if that’s what you’re really into: http://fullsail.com (click on Film -> Campus Explorer to see the campus) They even give you a free macbook pro.

    Set your sights higher :)

That is a great school design. I like it! It would make going to school more interesting.

Those pillows look so tempting for sleep. Nice school but the pillows are going to be a problem.

very cool pics. not like any school i’ve attended.

It’s not a university, it’s the danish equivalent to a US high school. It’s part of the new Copenhagen suburb of Ørestad, in which many of the buildings have the same innovative take on urban development, def. a must see for people with interest in architecture and city planning if you ever visit copenhagen. I live next door to them btw :)

Since when did Ikea start building schools? Nice.

Very nice but those lockers are tiny. I guess Danish kids don’t have a lot of stuff…

I live in Copenhagen and my girlfriend attends Ørestad Gymnasium.

It looks really cool, but because of everything being open it is impossible to focus on your teacher. There simple is to much noise all the time + there is no free macbook. Every student is offered a discount for a macbook but it is nowhere close to free.

Another thing is because they are so focused on the aesthetics you are not allowed to eat or drink anything anywhere but the cafeteria, which by the way is way to small. There is space for about 300 students and some 700+ students are attending Ørestad Gym.

I’m not sure how this side of things will “strengthen and renew the student’s professional capabilities”.

The pictures just seem like a lot of people lying on beanbags and using laptops:

That said, awesomely cool and there’s probably a very low absentee rate

It would be a dream to see schools like this. If any public school is going to be build in this way, than it will be just for demonstration and not for use.

i dont like this school anymore

Those orange pillows look like an awesome place to spend a hangover :)

Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania has a $7.8 Billion endowment seconded only by Harvard University in the U.S. On top of all that, their student population is only approximately 1,300. I’ve been there. The sheer extravagance of it will make you sick. Every graduate receives a full college scholarship. The students have full insurance benefits and their own private water park. I could write a book on everything they’re given. Go check it out.

This looks fake. There’s no gum stuck to the bottom of the furniture, like most of the schools I’ve seen. Are you sure this isn’t a photoshop job?

Too much money put into this school if it would ever go down with budget cuts like the ones we are facing

  27. fullsail1 says:

As for fullsail, I have a degree from there and it is a dump. More like a strip mall. The website may look nice and their studios are nice with nice equipment, but the most of the campus is just a dump. Oh, and half of your 4 hour labs for audio start at 1am or 4am.

Going to this school would be cool, but there are way better schools, too…and i think (hope) that its not the school of the future because it looks really hard to graduate from school sitting on bean bags.

There is an experimental school with similar teaching philosophy but more conventional architecture based at Flinders University in South Australia, called The Australian Science & Mathematics School (www.asms.edu.au). We have taken down walls around classrooms and welcome mp3s, mobile phones and personal laptops for personalised study access, with curriculum offered through an intranet 24/7 and ready access to teachers via email.
