Earth House is a project from a swiss architect whos aim is not to live under or in the ground, but with it!

The Earth House is a very flexible construction which can be built according to the wishes of its owners, being environmentally friendly construction, energy saving and it’s using the surroundings as an advantage. The house is shaped in order to preserve the natural environment.

Although they are build from earth the houses features the latest interior finishing like modern kitchens, bathrooms and house-control systems.

I really like this idea because it is eco friendly and doesn’t harm the environment when it is built. We should think more of using old techniques of contruction because sometimes they are the best.

And YES, I would live in a house like this .

I would love to be able to live in such a house. The heating and cooling bills would be much lower since the earth keeps a somewhat stable temperature

Who wouldn’t want to live in a house like that? They’re beautiful, and anyone who’s too close minded to see that is kind of crazy in my opinion.

Very neat idea. This design would probably have a HUGE advantage in energy savings. I would imagine that this type of house we be cooler AND would also retain heat far more efficiently than our current style of houses.

I would certainly live in a house like that. You’d save a fortune in heating / cooling bills, though I’d probably only be able to afford the, “here’s a shovel, dig your own hole” version.

These houses are very cool. The only drawback I’ve heard is that you may have a problem with gases such as radon with this underground dwellings. Very efficient, though!

Its all well and good to have the right ideals for “Green Living”…… but unless I am mistaken these are constructed mainly of CONCRETE???? Which is by far one of the most TOXIC building materials in the world!!!! Hmmmm, think about it guys! Dont get me wrong, I love the concept, and there are environmental advantages to living underground… but this is overshadowed by the toxic effects of concrete!

With the population growing and housing being built over too much farmland, these are ideal to keep growing food to feed the family as well as reduce our drain on energy. More safe from natural disasters, fire, hail, storms etc. What more could we want - a brilliant concept - more ideas please.

You can get one of those beautiful earthships if you are willing to put down an initial outlay of multiples in price as compared to traditional housing. Not to mention older ones in Taos, for example, were built with highly toxic components - the main one being tires. The stucco also tends to need frequent replacement, and a high number of those I visited had enjoyable tendencies such as wiring shorts, solar battery replacement costs, and mold. This last is typically because the best sealants and methods of moldproofing (or moisture proofing) a house all involve plastics you don’t want to use in a ‘pure’ green house.

As my contractor father says, “The greenest house is one that has already been built”. Mind you, not all EarthShips have the problems listed above. But the turnover in their ownership, as well as the frequency of work required to maintain them, speaks for the problems with the concept. Other types of underground housing, well, YMMV.

It looks very nice, but how much is it? And what is so environmentally friendly about it other than you save on some construction material since it uses the surroundings as walls?

So, like Hobbits? I mean, it’s cool and all, but anyone who’s saying it’s an original idea hasn’t been reading their Tolkien.
