Jane Percy, the Duchess of Northumberland, started a project that became one of the most ambitious public gardens created in Europe since World War II.

Only two thirds of the project, has been built so far, at a cost of about $86 million, most of which came from public financing and private donations.

Jacques Wirtz, a Belgian landscape architect is considered by some the modern equivalent of the designer of the gardens at Versailles.

He was hired by the duchess to design some parts of the garden.

During its first year of opening, the garden had 250,000 visitors, and by last year the number reached 625,000.

One of the attractions is a Rose Garden containing 3,000 roses from 180 varieties.

This tree house costed $7 million and was built amid 17 lime trees. It has an education center, a restaurant that can serve up to 80 people and a lot of

suspended walkways.

The duchess still has to raise $60 million to complete the third phase of the project.

I wonder how nice and calm it would be to walk in this garden…

That’s nice. It’s no Longwood Gardens, but it’s nice.

It should be:
- “what” an $86 million dollar garden looks like
- “responded” to this post rather than “responsed”
- “inform me when someone posts a new message here”

Otherwise this post is fantastic!

Opium is not plant. Opium is from poppy.

Required… I’ve been to Longwood Gardens many times as I live a mere 20 minutes from it, and I must agree, for probably half the price it’s 10x as nice.

Wow. Renting out your house for movies must be profitable. But if you have to spend to excess, spending it on a public garden is a good thing. Kudos!
